If you’re like me, one thing you can’t resist is good alternative music and hot new bands to obsess over during the summer. Whether your taste ranges from more alternative rock to indie alternative, you can’t resist a good band and a new addictive song. And what makes alternative music so unique is the vast style of music it entails and how it is continuously changing and evolving. Modest Mouse, Of Monsters and Men, Walk the Moon, and New Politics are just some of the bands that make up your summer playlist. And while everyone is obsessing over the next country concert, you just can’t wait to get to the next Warped Tour. So whether you’re looking for a hot new alternative playlist or just looking for new bands to follow, these bands are sure to bump up your summer playlist.
Based in Los Angeles and formed in 2011, I first stumbled upon this band earlier this summer when I was attended an alternative festival in the Bay Area. I randomly showed up at their set and was fairly impressed with their music. Peaches, one of their more popular singles is the perfect combination of simple and catchy. While this band may not be as well known as other alternative bands, sometimes it is the less popular bands that spark people’s interest more than the popular ones.
If you are looking for fun bands to see in concert this summer, I highly recommend this one. When I first saw this band, I wasn’t expecting much. I knew some of their songs like HeavyDirtySoul and Tear in my Heart but that was all I knew about them. However their set blew me away. Not only were their songs catchy but their performance was entertaining and extremely interesting. At one point one of the band members, Tyler Joseph, stage dived and wound up in the back of the audience. Not only are their songs catchy and fun to listen to, but seeing them in concert is an absolute must.
Always an interesting band, Panic! At the Disco also puts on an entertaining concert. Headlining at Live 105’s BFD as well as several other venues this summer and coming out with their new song Hallelujah have been some of their highlights for the summer. Not only is Hallelujah a must to add to your summer playlist, but their popular hits like Nine In the Afternoon, The Ballad of Mona Lisa, and I Write Sins Not Tragedies are all perfect songs to jam out to any time of the day.
Based in the Bay Area, this local band holds a special place in my heart. Playing on the local band stage at BFD and also at Warped Tour has really helped get this band’s name out. It was, in fact, how I first heard of them. Their song Motions is the perfect summer tune for hanging out with friends.
Another Bay Area local band, Beta State is also a great band to check out. Their song I Will Remember You is the perfect song to jam out to just about any time of the day. Though it is not new for the summer, their album Stars, released in 2010, is a hidden gem I am so glad to have found.
Very well known, The Mowgli’s are one of my all time favorite alternative bands. Their song, San Francisco, is not only extremely catchy but also hits home for many of the Bay Area kids that grew up going to San Francisco, much like myself. They also came out with a new song just in time for summer, ironically, called Summertime. Much like their other music, it is definitely catchy and easy to become addicted to.
So if you are looking to update your music playlist this summer, be sure to check out these great alternative hits.
